Being at the Restaurant Leadership Conference this week has provided me with a great window into how the industry operates and where it’s headed.

Key Insights from the Conference

Three quick reflections emerged from my experience:

Reenergized Brands

Dutch Bros Coffee, with a special shoutout to Christine Barone for being named Leader of the Year, along with Chili's, El Pollo Loco, Inc. (kudos to Liz Williams), and others, are demonstrating what it takes to reinvigorate growth. They are bringing intentionality and clarity to their brands. This clarity is essential for connecting with consumers in today's fast-paced market.

AI Is Becoming Table Stakes

As technology evolves, nearly everything is becoming AI-driven. Some areas, such as voice AI, are already overcrowded. However, there are emerging opportunities that tackle under-addressed pain points. For instance, operations execution and franchise marketing are ripe for innovation. Embracing AI can provide a competitive edge in these areas.

The Value Equation

Every brand has a different answer to the value equation. In times of uncertainty, meeting consumers where they are requires multiple levers. Value today takes many forms: approachable pricing, innovation, portion cues, and memorable experiences. I saw great examples from Jim Mazany on how P.F. Chang's is evolving the customer experience to create lasting memories.

The Importance of Menu and Experience Innovation

One wish for next year is to see more focus on menu and experience innovation. I’m biased, but I believe this is a major growth lever. Consumers are looking for unique experiences that go beyond just food. They want to feel a connection to the brands they choose.

The Role of Founders and Innovation Teams

As founders and innovation teams, we play a crucial role in shaping the future of our brands. We must be willing to push boundaries and explore new ideas. It’s about taking risks and being open to change. This mindset is essential for driving growth and staying relevant in a competitive landscape.

Embracing Change

Change is inevitable in our industry. Those who embrace it will thrive. We must remain adaptable and responsive to consumer needs. This means continuously evaluating our strategies and being willing to pivot when necessary.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Restaurant Leadership Conference has reinforced the importance of innovation and adaptability in our industry. As we move forward, let’s keep these insights in mind. Together, we can accelerate growth and develop breakthrough consumer products that resonate with our audience.
